Nightly set up fee is only $15.
The Sunset Celebration is a juried art and craft fair which only allows hand
crafted items. Before a person may sell there we must see that they do indeed
make their items themselves. we have two meetings a month in which they
demonstrate their craft. The meetings are on the first and third Monday of each
month. The point of the meeting is see that you can make when you have to sell
we made it a rule that before you are accepted WE MUST SEE YOU MAKE ONE of what
you wish to sell. it's our rule it doesn't mean we don't believe that you make
it. but we do need to see a demonstration. the good news is that if you live far
away you can do this by skype! you will need to get in touch with us to arange
this, but for some people it's easier than traveling.
Display
size
each artist is allowed a space of 8 feet wide by 6 feet deep, the front half of
your display must be short (less than 4 feet tall) the back half can be any
height (diagram) each person may use up to 150 watts of electrical power. here
is a diagram of a typical setup at Mallory but feel free to be creative.
here are some pictures of mallory displays...
Here are some things to keep in mind, bring lights and a 25 foot extension chord. consider displaying tropical colors. A large display sells better than a small display, use height. Use a table cloth, all these things help.
10 by 10 tents do not fit at Mallory.
Getting to and from work
there are two modes of transportation to and from Mallory. Bike and car, cars
can be parked on the Street on in the Lot. if you live downtown biking is
wonderful. here are some pictures of how people bike to work. other people
unload their things in the parking lot, and then find free parking on the
street. This is tricky but in time people get a system for this, you can also
pay to park in the lot.
Getting
around town
if you have a bike and are close to Duval st, bring your bike and never worry
about traffic and parking again. if you have a car, be warned, parking near
Duval is difficult.
When
to come
Peak season starts the weekend after Valentines Day, and it ends when the kids
go back to school in August/September. September and October are generally dead
times but not always. if we have to hurricanes they can be ok months.
Where to stay
In key west accommodation is expensive. everyone wants to live here! for a short
visit, you can check the travel sites such as kayak.com for Hotels. vacation
rentals are available from many companies one example is
athomekeywest.com If you are
military camping at the
Naval Air Station (NAS) is the best deal in town. the youth hostel is called
seashell motel and has rooms as well
as dorms. Sleeping in a camper van in key west is illegal and commonly happens
around the eastern part of south rosevelt as well as other places.
Longer term accommodations can be searched for on
craigslist, in the
key west citizen,
or in the
keynoter. a room on a house should be arround 900$
per month, a one bedroom apartment is $1300 and up a two bedroom is $1700
and up. if you have a boat you can live in the mooring fields for free and pay
to park your dingy and use the land facilities.
How much money will I earn
most people find they can live in key west if they earn at least $100 to $200 a
night, earning more than that is difficult. this is not a show where you make
$1000 each day. the people Shopping at Mallory are there for fun and like buying
souvenirs in the $10 to $35 range (your experience may vary) they key word is
souvenirs, not art. What sells well is cat designs, palm trees local scenes,
reminders of key west and the tropics. Consider providing providing packaging
for travel, for some people it's a good idea to have a sign that says you
provide packaging.
