Participation Committee Meeting

February 5, 2007

Attending:  Mike L.   Barb W.  Ann S.  Carol L. (Alternate)

The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. in Bayview Park.  We had six applicants show up for new products and one participant for add-a-product. We also had one mail in request.

Barb W. collected $100.00 in jury fees and turned the money over to Ann S.

  1. Joey Smith was applying to add pendants and earrings made from Mammoth Ivory and hand drawn scrimshaw to his line.  He is currently selling scrimshaw pieces on the pier but not in the form of jewelry.  He demonstrated his technique and told us he would be putting the pendants on leather cord or a chain, which ever the buyer wanted.

Joey was approved to sell pendants and earrings in addition to his other products he was previously juried for.  Passed unanimously. (No fee collected).

  1. Kevin Oliver was applying to make hand made fabric objects, such as scarf’s, hats, purses, art hangings, etc.  He uses a process much like paper making to manufacture his product.  He demonstrated the process for the PC. Kevin was approved unanimously. Paid $20.00 fee.
  2. Mitch Karls was applying to do photography.  He produced many types of photography as well as his negatives for the prints.  He was approved unanimously. Paid $20.00 fee.
  3. Casco Borges was applying to sell hand made kaleidoscopes.  He has appeared before the PC in January but had not been prepared to demonstrate how they were made.  He demonstrated for the PC the process of putting together the item as well as his style of art work on the outside of the pieces.  He was approved unanimously. Paid $20.00 fee.
  4. Robert Heller was applying to do three types of products: Air Brush Tattoo’s, Marshmallow shooter and Sand Art.  He was advised that we could not allow air brushing on the pier as it could be detrimental to the other vendors setting up next to him. His paint spray could damage others property.  That item was denied unanimously. Robert demonstrated how he made the marshmallow shooter and how it worked.  The shooter was denied unanimously based upon the fact that food being shot all over the pier was not a good thing and someone would have to clean it up.  It was also denied because it does not have any artistic creativity to it. Robert then demonstrated his Sand Art.  He would provide bottles and let each buyer design their own sand art.  This was denied based upon the fact that it is not his art work and he did not do anything but furnish the supplies.  All three items were denied.  Paid $20.00 fee.
  5. Craig O’Conner and Nicole Simuio were applying to do underwater photography.  They do shark research as well as instructional talks on saving the oceans and the creatures within.  They take all of their own film shots as they are doing their research.  They were advised that we would accept their photographs pending them furnishing us with the negatives.  Passed unanimously pending the negatives which they will be allowed to bring to the pier to show at least two members of the PC.  Paid $20.00 fee.

All participants were advised the call or contact the Pier Manager on Wednesday afternoon to determine if they were accepted or not.  They were also advised that they would have to furnish a copy of their Sales Tax Certificate from the State of Florida before they would be allowed to set up and sell their products.

After the participants left the area the PC discussed each item and we all agreed on our votes.

Ann S. brought up an idea of making an area for vendors/artists to set up where they can demonstrate how their items are made.  We all agreed that is was a good idea and that we would approach the Board with it.

Ann S. will furnish Barb W. with a receipt for the $100.00 cash for the fee’s collected today.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m..
