Participation Committee Meeting
March 19, 2007
Approved at the March 7, 2007 Board Meeting
Attending: Hector G. Melainie G. Meike G. Elaine D. Ann S. Barb W.
We had six new applicants and two add a product to jury today.
1. Jason Jean wants to make stuffed teddy bears. He did not have anything with him to show how these are made. He did have one with him that was put together and ready to be stuffed. We advised him that we had to see him actually make the items and that we could do a home jury on him. It was decided that Elaine D. and Hector G. would make arrangements to do the home jury. He is approved pending a successful home jury. He paid his $20.00 jury fee in cash.
2. Kathy Bansen would like to do chair massage on the pier. Since we never have anyone out doing this anymore we had her do a massage on Elaine. She was approved by unanimous vote. She paid her $20 fee in cash.
3. Todd Sherman wants to do oil and pastel paintings in an expressionist style. We told him we did not want anymore Key West paintings. He was not prepared to paint so he will be home juried by Melanie G. and Meike G. He paid his $20 fee in cash. He was approved pending a successful home jury.
4. Laura Schipp would like to sell her pottery work. She is taking classes at FKCC under the direction of Jay Grogin. She could not demonstrate her skills at the park so it was decided that Barb W. would contact Jay Grogin and verify that she is making her pottery. She has to use the kiln at the college since she does not own one. She was approved pending a successful discussion with Mr. Grogin. She did not have her jury fee with her and she will go to the pier tonight and give Elaine D. the $20 fee.
5. Benjamin McGraw applied to sell hand made palm frond baskets, roses and other woven items. We watched him make a basket and saw the other items he makes. He was approved pending his payment of the $20 jury fee.
6. Caren Ragan applied to do original oil paintings, cards and prints of her originals. Her paintings are very different that what is currently being sold at sunset. She will also be doing some painting at the pier. She was approved and paid her jury fee by check.
7. Linda McCall wants to add painted caps and visors to her other items. They are painted by hand and have cute phrases on them. She was approved.
8. Marty Karabees came with two new add a product items. The first is a tile that is his art work, but is done entirely by computer. The committee feels that he should do more hand work on these items, such as a frame, stand or something that he has to do by hand. He was denied and will be advised of our suggestions. His other item was T-Shirts. He has his original art work silk screened onto a shirt in just black ink. He then paints the shirts with many different colors and they look just like his art work. The committee felt that the designs were different that what is currently being sold and he was approved for this item.
The committee discussed many things about our jury process. The letter that was written to the Board from John Jones was read to the PC members. The letter states that the City does not want junk and imported items on the pier. We need to keep that in mind when we jury new participants.
