P. C. Meeting Minutes

April 5, 2010

Attending: Susan Johnson, Fran Doll, Barb Winko, Melanie Griffith, Ron Augustine, Leeanne McCarthy. Trish was out on excused absence.

We have 6 people to work with. One add a product, one re-jury, and four new applicants. A total of $80.00 was collected in cash and turned over to the Pier Manager for deposit.

Elise Scott was asked to come to the PC Meeting due to complaints about her not making her own product. She was asked to bring 6 months of invoices for raw products. She complied and Fran and Leeanne were to go over the invoices and make a decision on the issue. Also, Fran, Leeanne, Melanie and Eddie Wolford (alternate and knowledgeable in glass fusing) are to set up a date to view her studio.

Danielle Wittler came with an add a product, tank tops that are embellished with beads and buttons that are sewn on by hand. She was approved by unanimous vote. No fee collected.

Patti Cantalini came to jury for hand made purses. She did not bring a sewing machine so she was advised to return in two weeks to demonstrate how she makes her product. $20.00 jury fee was collected. Pending

Kevin Florez Bernal juried for Art Work original and prints. He does these in acrylics, ink, color pencils, etc. He will frame his work. $20.00 jury fee was collected. Approved by unanimous vote.

Emilio Estrada juried for decorative plates. He paints each piece by hand. We ask that he display signage stating these are for decoration only and not to be used for food items. $20.00 jury fee was collected. He was approved by unanimous vote.

A complaint was made to the P C Committee regarding Wendel Winko. The complaint was filed in writing by Elise Scott. She asked in the complaint that I (Barb Winko) step down from PC because of conflict of interest. Barb let Fran and the other members hear and discuss the complaint from Elise and did not participate in the dialog. I (Barb) wrote a memo to the PC stating that I would not resign from PC. If they wanted me to leave they would have to vote on it and take it to the Board. Barb also stated that if the other members felt that Wink was in violation of selling items he did not make that the PC follow previous protocol regarding how it would be handled. For example, asking Elise not to continue to sell the neck rings she does not make and taking no further action on the violation.

Fran Doll will write the report on the Elise complaint regarding Wink and will become a part of these minutes.

We also held a discussion regarding how to keep the items being sold at Mallory are the artists work. Each member will write up their thoughts and ideas to be discussed at a future meeting.

Meeting adjourned.

Addendum

Barb Winko turned over temporary chairmanship to me, Fran Doll, while we are dealing with all issues pertaining to Elise Scott’s re-jury and her subsequent complaint to us regarding Wendel Winko.

I handed the complaint about Elise and the request for her records to Pier Manager Burt on Sat. April 12, 2010. He immediately assumed that our complaint was in retaliation to Elise’s complaint about Wink. I assured him that Elise had already been invited to PC to air her complaint and our complaint against her was on the table since we took office as PC this year.

Elise presented the committee with a time/activity summary of her craft activities plus receipts from 2008, 2009 and 2010. She pointed out that there were no purchases of glass for this year ( until 2 days previous to PC) because she had "just run out of glass" and she had "stocked up on pieces while still at home" back in spring of 2009. She asked that her records be withheld from Barb Winko to protect her suppliers. This was agreed to. Leanne McCarthy made a few notes about dates and delivery addresses and then I took possession of the records

Hector Godoy, Annie Summers and Jason Probstein, the new glass blower, were also in attendance. Hector was immediately shut down by Leanne when he entered the meeting making derogatory gestures. He had been informed earlier that he would not be allowed to speak unless he was questioned. Eddie Wolford was also present as an alternate PC member who would know about fused glass work.

Elise insisted on knowing who had complained about her and was informed that it was her boyfriend Robert Mathison by way of Sandy Guthrie. The complaint was made several months ago.

Elise was informed that her records would be reviewed. Later that day a home jury was arranged with her for Tues. 4/6/2010. I (Fran), Leanne, Melanie Griffith and Ron Augustine home juried Elise. Eddie Wolford was unable to attend, so we lacked his expert opinion. Elise showed us how she makes her pendant pieces. She was told that there was no question that she knows how to make what she is selling. The question was whether she did in fact make everything she sold. When questioned about the cabuchons that she had several bags of, she said that she had made all of those while she was still at home in 2009.

After the home jury, PC met and aired concerns that what Elise had shown us did not accurately show what she had on the table at Sunset Celebration. We also questioned the cabuchons, but we had no way to verify what she claimed about this. She had 2 working, timed kilns, a stack of new glass sheets and snips, but there seemed to be a lack of most of the usual power tools and mess that one would associate with an active glass studio.

Upon review of her records, it was determined that her purchases of glass seemed somewhat insufficient to the amount of glass she has been selling, but there were several purchases in 2009 and a purchase of dichroic glass in Oct. of 2008.

It was recommended that Elise be allowed to continue at Sunset, since there was insufficient evidence to reprimand her in any way. We also plan on occasionally checking her table for compliance.

Regarding Elise’s complaint against Wendel Winko, she presented a piece that was purchased at his table by a third party and witnessed by Annie and Burt. She also opened a box from a wholesale oriental supplier with a piece that matched the one purchased from Winko’s table. She called on Jason Probstein to inform us on how and why these were identified as imported. We promised to investigate the complaint.

Later in the same meeting, Wendel Winko joined us and admitted that he had sold one piece of imported glass. He admitted to the error as a "stupid error in judgement" and apologized. He said that there were no more imported pieces on his table and assured us of his compliance.

Letters have been written and delivered to both Wink and Elise stating the end results of our investigation. We consider the matter closed and no further action will be taken against either one.
