Participation Committee Meeting Minutes
December 5, 2015
PC Members present.
Ryan Stimers, LeeAnne McCarthy, Ron Augustine, Linda McCall, Deb Graffeo
Absent: Hector Godoy
M. Susan Butler – add on to her arm knit infinity scarves. Demonstrated making of a embellished yarn flower out of her remnants, which is then threaded onto a silver wire necklace which she shapes. Pretty, enough to be different from the other jewelry products.
PC Recommendation: Approve
Konrad Kwiatkowski – Demonstrated traditional sailor’s art knot work. Retired Coast Guard, trying to use reclaimed ropes from Coast Guard and boatyards. Nice history that ties in (pun intended) with our community. Recommend Approve.
Karin Valverde – Demonstrated soft sculpture toys, including mermaid, jellyfish. Also demonstrated painting rustic conch houses designed to hang. Nice work all around. The soft sculpture is detailed. Houses are “funky” and nicely done. PC Recommendation: Approve.
PC juried the following two participants, and are electing not to recommend them for approval:
Samuel Saliman – Written names on grains of rice, placed into purchase vessel necklace on a purchased cord and engraving with a Dremmel names, etc. on purchased leather bracelets.
PC discussed at length. Ultimate vote was no. There was not enough creative element contained in either product. PC does not want to approve someone solely based on hand made.
Cassi Clayton: Hand painted, small signs with written words and glued on shells, bottle openers. PC recommends no based on not enough creativity. If she would like to expand on concept and incorporate artwork, etc. we would re-jury her with no additional fee.
Other notes from PC:
PC discussed Holly from The Essential Dog Company. She advertised for sales help at Mallory Square during sunset. Email received from Holly asking permission due to back issues. Email sent from Linda advising her she could not hire anyone to work both for her but she could have a helper provided she was onsite during the entire event and working at the booth. Have not heard back from her as of 12-9-15.
Ryan has decided to take a year off of PC. Posted in Sunset Celebration that we need more members. We’re having issues with not having a quorum.
Lee Anne, Ron, Deb and Linda would like to serve again on PC. Not known if Hector is interested. He has missed meetings.
PC cannot be assured of a quorum for the December 21 meeting. Ryan and Ron out of town. Hector has not been at recent meetings. If the Board can appoint another PC member, we can meet. Otherwise we will cancel.
PC also discussed the Saturday jury experiment. While we had good turn out, there didn’t seem to be a strong demand for an alternative day. PC will return to the Monday dates effective Jan. 2016.
